      Academic Service

Academic Development and Service Department administers or manages three centers: the Academic Service Center, the State Personnel Development Center, and the Testing and Evaluation Center.

         CULI provides contributions regarding academic services to the general public through the Academic Service Center. These services include:

Training Services
Since employees in private agencies and private enterprises realize the increasing importance of being able to use English effectively, the Academic Service Center has organized special English courses in the evenings, on Saturdays and during term breaks as part of its numerous community services. Also, both high-school and university students who would like to improve their English skills are also regular customers of the center.

The Academic Service Center also offers tailor-made courses for individual companies, designed to meet the needs and requirements of the participants. The following is a list of some government and private organizations which have requested CULI’s training services:

Apart from training services, CULI also provides Thai-Eng and Eng-Thai translation and English language editing services for all types of documents including abstracts, theses, articles, essays, research reports, annual reports, etc. These services are offered by our staff of trained language specialists both native English speakers and Thais.

2. State personnel Development Center

CULI also conducts in-service training for government officials in using English effectively, and university instructors and primary and secondary school teachers in proficiency development, teaching methodology, and the use of multimedia. This work is the responsibility of the State Personnel Development Center.

1. Intensive Course
This course is aimed at developing English language proficiency in four skills:
• The Listening Component includes practice in listening to various types of materials: dialogues, news reports, talks and lectures.
• The Speaking Component includes activities aimed at improving oral communication skills through role plays, simulations and discussions.
• The Reading Component includes practice in improving reading strategies as well as reading speed. The topics of the materials range from general interest to more academic or semi-professional topics.
• The Writing Component helps participants communicate ideas through well-organized writing, improving ease, speed and accuracy.

2. Presentation Skills
The Presentation Skills course is aimed at increasing the confidence and skills necessary for making effective presentations. The course includes these components:
• Introducing Yourself and Your Organization
• Features of Good Presentations
• Planning Your Presentation: Making a Good Start
• Organizing ideas for Your Presentation
• Finishing off with an Effective Conclusion
• The Language of Oral Presentations
• Your Body language and Your Presentation
• Using Audio Visual Aids to Support Your Presentation
• Introducing Speakers and Moderating Discussions
• Final Project Presentation
• Holding Meetings, Negotiations, and Discussions

3. Effective Communication
This course is aimed at helping participants develop fluency in communicating verbally in general English with English speaker, with the emphasis firmly placed on listening and speaking. The offered topics include asking for/giving information, greeting, making appointments, asking for/giving directions, using the telephone, making complaints, and asking for permission.

4. Professional Writing
This course is aimed at practising various skills in advanced English writing to enhance proficiency when corresponding with English readers. The offered topics include practising necessary professional English writing i.e. notes and messages, e-mails, memos, notices and minutes of meetings, agendas, forms, and letters.

5. Teacher Training Course: Teaching Methodology
The course is organized for teachers of English or members of the general public who are interested in TEFL in order to develop their professional skills necessary for teachers. The course covers these topics:

4. Teaching Reading
5. Teaching Writing
6. Teaching Integrated Skills
7. Classroom Management Skills & Language in the Classroom

Tailor-made Courses
The following are tailor-made courses offered to government organizations/institutions.

1. E-Learning Course
As the internet is widely used and becoming a major tool in learning English, CULI has created an e-learning course for those who want to study English by themselves at home. The course consists of two levels: Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate, with 80 modules each. The learners can study three English skills on their own: Grammar and structure, Reading, and Listening. A Web-board service is also provided on a weekly basis for learners to ask questions about the lessons.

2. English Camp Operating Training
Research has shown that learners need to have a positive attitude toward learning in order to be effective learners, and teachers are required to be able to motivate their students in learning English. Thus, the State Personnel Development Center created this course for teachers who would like to arrange an English camp effectively. The training covers four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

3. Study Trip
There are three phases offered: Administration and Management; Management Strategies and effective Communication; and Business Management and Company Visits. CULI organizes the program in cooperation with the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University and the Moller Centre, Churchill College, University of Cambridge, UK. During the last phase, the trainees take a trip to the UK for training hosted by the Moller Centre.

3. Testing and Evaluation Center

Apart form academic services, CULI produces, analyses and develops various types of language tests to meet the growing demand for a high standard of English proficiency from university students and the public at large, through the Testing and Evaluation Center.

Chulalongkorn University Test of English Proficiency (CU-TEP)
CULI has supplied the CU-TEP to the university to be used with graduate students. In addition, the Institute has used the CU-TEP in providing a standardized test as requested by government agencies as well as private enterprises. The test consists of three parts: listening, reading, and writing.

Chulalongkorn University Academic Aptitude Test (CU-AAT)
CULI has designed the CU-AAT for the university to be used with international programs of all faculties. The test includes identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, improving paragraphs, completing sentences, and reading short and long passages.

Practice Test (CU-TEP)
CULI has created the Practice Test book with a CD-ROM for students and anyone who would like to prepare themselves for a CU-TEP test. The book includes four forms of the test and explanations of some important grammatical points.

The center also provides test designing service to any government or private agencies.
