Globalization in the postmodern era with its complexities and communication in multilingual, multicultural, and diverse contexts has necessitated a re-evaluation and adaptation of English language teaching to align with these diversities. Teaching approaches that focus solely on a single language and culture are no longer sufficient to meet current needs. Therefore, educators need to develop skills to incorporate multilingual and multicultural contexts into their teaching, promoting acceptance and appreciation of students’ linguistic and cultural diversity. Shifting from a singular teaching approach to an inclusive pedagogical framework will help create a learning environment that genuinely fosters intercultural communication skills.
The 59th RELC International Conference, Singapore serves as a platform for participants and presenters to engage in discussions and review teaching methodologies, curricula, and assessment strategies to discover effective approaches and innovations for improvement and development. The exchange of ideas and insights during the conference would foster a deeper understanding and introduce new perspectives on learning and teaching English in diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) is aware of the importance of enhancing English teaching skills in diverse contexts for English instructors in Thailand. Consequently, it has organized the annual Post-RELC seminar in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, building on the insights from the RELC Annual Conference in Singapore. In 2025, the Seminar will be held under the theme “Learning and Teaching English in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts,” providing a forum for speakers and participants to discuss and exchange a wider range of new teaching methods, with presentations on innovative teaching practices designed to support learners in an era of multilingualism and multiculturalism.
